Vicky Eatrides named as new boss of the CRTC

(OTTAWA) Canadian Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez announced Monday that Vicky Eatrides will be the next president and chief executive officer of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC).

Mme Eatrides will serve for a five-year term beginning January 5, 2023.

She was until recently Assistant Deputy Minister at Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, a position she started in 2019 after spending several years in senior roles at the Competition Bureau.

Mme Eatrides will replace Ian Scott, who had been head of the CRTC since 2017.

The leader of the Bloc Québécois, Yves-François Blanchet, deplored on Twitter the “end of the English-French alternation” as an “affront”.

The change in leadership comes as the administrative tribunal finds itself in the spotlight due to two controversial government bills that seek to give it new powers.

The Senate is currently considering Liberal bills that would update broadcasting laws to encompass online streaming platforms and create a framework for web giants to pay media outlets for their content.
