Psychiatry can help animals with disorders such as hyperactivity. Specialist veterinarians are increasingly being consulted.
When a dog exhibits abnormal behavior, more and more owners are consulting specialized veterinarians. A young adopted dog is affectionate, but possessive with her owners. During the session, the behaviorist observes her, asks questions and reframes the owners. She gives them keys to channel their dog’s emotions and tips to keep her calm.
Another dog shows signs of hyperactivity and abnormal frenetic movements. She prescribes more outings and games, but also an anxiolytic to calm him down. The cost of the consultation is 185 euros, but for the owners, overwhelmed, it is a last resort. For ten years, this behavioral medicine has been taught at the veterinary school of Maisons-Alfort (Val-de-Marne). “There are real severe psychiatric disorders”assures Dr. Claude Béata, veterinary psychiatrist. Behavioral disorders are the leading cause of animal abandonment in France, even though they can be treated.
