Dutchman Max Verstappen won the Abu Dhabi race and earned his first Formula 1 drivers’ championship in his career, following an incredible end to the race on Sunday.
At the wheel of his Red Bull, Verstappen beat Briton Lewis Hamilton on Mercedes, overtaking him on the very last lap.
Starting from second place, behind Verstappen, Hamilton had managed to seize the first position from the start without ever conceding it.
However, a crash for Torontonian Nicholas Latifi (Williams) left the safety car with five laps to go. The car cleared the track with one lap to go, paving the way for Verstappen’s 10th victory in 2021.
Overall, Verstappen completes the season with 395.5 points, eight more than Hamilton. The two drivers had started the race tied for the top of the standings.
Quebecer Lance Stroll (Aston Martin) finished in 13e rank Sunday, and he completes the season at the same level of the general classification with a total of 34 points.
