Véronique Hivon becomes a visiting professor at the University of Montreal

Former PQ member Véronique Hivon joins the University of Montreal (UdeM). She will be a visiting professor in the Department of Political Science, UdeM announced on Wednesday.

She will also act as an expert in residence at UdeM’s new Public and International Affairs House, starting on 1er september.

Mme Hivon left politics last fall, but the one who was behind several major projects had no intention of stopping her contribution to Quebec society there.

“When I announced that I would not seek a new political mandate, I indicated that, after an exciting life in this field, I now wanted to be able to deepen certain societal issues, in a different setting, and share my experience” , she shared in a press release.

In particular, she was Minister Delegate for Social Services and Youth Protection under the government of Pauline Marois. It was in this capacity, and also when she was in opposition, that she worked on several social advances, including the Act respecting end-of-life care.

More recently, she played a role in the advent of specialized courts for sexual violence and domestic violence.

“I am delighted with the arrival of Véronique Hivon within our faculty. His extensive political experience will be an asset for our students,” said the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Frédéric Bouchard.

Mme Hivon will teach in the master’s program in political science – professional path in public and international affairs, in addition to participating in applied research projects around current issues, specifies the university.

Mme Hivon is a graduate of McGill University’s Faculty of Law and holds an MA in Social Policy Analysis and Planning from the London School of Economics and Political Science. She was also a lawyer and held positions in the Quebec government before being elected MP for Joliette in 2008.
