A fire that broke out in the housing of a building of the Office municipal d’habitation de Montréal on Sunday afternoon mobilized 70 firefighters and forced the evacuation of residents of 135 housing units. Three people were affected by the smoke.
The Montreal Fire Safety Service (SIM) received an alert around 4:20 p.m. due to the activated alarm system.
A fire broke out in a home on 9e floor of this building belonging to the Office municipal d’habitation de Montréal (OMHM) located on Lasalle Boulevard, near Woodland Park, in Verdun, in Montreal.
Quickly, a second alert was launched to deal with the fire, mobilizing 70 firefighters, explains Marie-Ève Beausoleil, section head for the SIM.
However, the flames did not spread to adjacent homes and the fire was quickly brought under control. Three people – two men and a woman – were transferred to the CHUM due to smoke inhalation. Their lives are not in danger, specifies the section head.
Two hours after the initial alert, residents of this 135-unit building began to return to the premises. Seven homes on the floor below the fire were affected by water and the tenants will be supported by the Red Cross, says Mme Beautiful sun.
This is an HLM in which many seniors live, but which is not dedicated to elderly people.
