In Italy, what is the first assessment in Venice, after the implementation of a five-euro entrance tax for tourists on busy days?
Nothing seems to attract tourists from Venice (Italy), not even the tax introduced by the town hall three weeks ago. “It’s five euros. Venice is still worth doing at least once”, puts a man into perspective. On the canals and in the alleys, visitors are always numerous, and revenues are spectacular for the city. In eight paying days, the town hall collected more than 700,000 euros, what it thought it would collect in 29 days.
Many people accuse the town hall of wanting to make a profit on the backs of tourists. The Deputy for Finance, Michele Zuin, denies this. “In 2024, we will not cover the expenses we made to set up this system. Next year, if there are gains for the town hall, we will lower citizens’ taxes”, assures the latter. The prospect does not console the residents, many of whom consider the measure ineffective. The town hall plans to make the price of entry fluctuating in 2025, between two and ten euros per person depending on the number of visitors.
