In Venezuela, opposition leader Maria Corina Machado thanked the seven European countries, including France, that requested the publication of the full results of the July 28 presidential election on Sunday, August 4, congratulating them for their “commitment to democracy”on the social network X.
In a statement released by the Italian government on Saturday, Germany, Spain, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland and Portugal expressed their “strong concern” in the face of the situation in Venezuela. The opposition is crying fraud and claiming victory for its candidate, Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, in the presidential election in which the incumbent Nicolas Maduro was declared the winner.
The National Electoral Council (CNE) ratified on Friday the victory of President Nicolas Maduro with 52% of the vote against 43% for Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, the opposition candidate who replaced Maria Corina Machado at short notice, who was declared ineligible. Claiming to be the victim of computer hacking, the CNE, accused by the opposition of being subservient to the government, has still not given the details of the vote by polling station. The opposition believes that this is a maneuver to avoid revealing the real results, and has published the minutes of each polling station on a website.
According to these documents, the validity of which is rejected by Nicolas Maduro, Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia won the election with 67% of the votes. “We support the request for verification of the reports that we have presented, as soon as possible, at an international and independent level”said the opposition leader. “We also appreciate the call for an end to the persecution and repression that, in recent hours, has been cruelly deployed against innocent people who are only asking for respect for the popular sovereignty that they exercised on Sunday.”she added.
