The opposition led by Juan Guaidó like the regime of Nicolas Maduro “have signaled in recent days their intention to resume their discussions in Mexico City”, he said at a press conference in Los Angeles.
The head of the American diplomacy repeated that Washington was “really ready to support” any effort of dialogue, and hinted that positive results would lead to a review of the sanctions imposed on Caracas
“If we see change, the sanctions can be lifted,” he said at the conclusion of the “Summit of the Americas” held this week in Los Angeles.
On the occasion of this regional summit, US President Joe Biden reaffirmed his support for Juan Guaidó as “interim president”, but did not go so far as to invite him.
He also did not invite a representative of Nicolas Maduro’s regime, which upset a number of Latin American states, Mexico in the lead.
Former President Donald Trump said in 2019 that he would not recognize the re-election of President Nicolas Maduro following an election during which numerous irregularities had been reported.
Venezuela, subjected to a volley of American sanctions, is experiencing a very serious economic crisis, and its inhabitants are emigrating by the millions to escape misery.
