Groupe TVA announced on Friday the end of its weekend newscasts in Quebec. A measure effective from the week of June 19.
Its owner, Quebecor, explains that its decision was inevitable in the “current reality of the media”. He attributes it to “virulent competition from web giants and Radio-Canada, significant declines in advertising revenues, as well as a costly and unfair regulatory framework”.
Groupe TVA will maintain reporting teams to cover the news of the national capital on Saturdays and Sundays, but it will instead feed the TVA Nouvelles network, as well as the continuous news channel LCN. Weekly news bulletins in Quebec are maintained.
“Producing information and programming that reflects the different regions of Quebec requires major investments and in the current economic and competitive context, we find ourselves unable to maintain the status quo,” indicated the President and CEO. management of Quebecor, Pierre Karl Péladeau.
