More than a thousand people, at the very least, marched on Saturday afternoon in the streets of downtown Montreal to denounce the oppressive regime in power in Iran and to demand respect for the rights and freedoms of the residents of this country shaken since weeks with a series of protests.
A large crowd wearing the colors of the Iranian flag first gathered near the Gamelin Gardens before marching shortly after 2:30 p.m. on Berri Street, then on René-Lévesque Boulevard, towards Place du Canada.
Many demonstrators brandish posters denouncing the regime in power in Iran or showing the faces of some of the people who died at the hands of the police in this country, where protests are often repressed in violence. Many are calling for a revolution to end the dictatorial regime of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
This demonstration is part of a series of protests that have taken place every week in several major cities around the world since the death on September 16 of Mahsa Amini. The 22-year-old died after being arrested in Tehran by vice police for breaching the Islamic Republic’s dress code.
Many demonstrations against the oppression of women have taken place since, a movement that does not seem to be running out of steam.
