Tuesday, July 5, the thermometer climbed everywhere in France. The massifs are particularly monitored to avoid the start of fires.

The summer period is often conducive to fires with the high temperatures. The firefighters are attentive to prevent the flames from ravaging the massifs. “We, the main objective is to do prevention, really to arrive at a small fire start to protect the massif or if we can put it out”warns one of the firefighters. The wind that often blows in the Var as well as a humidity level are factors that can lead to fires starting.

In 2022, the drought hits earlier than in other years, which forces the emergency services to be extra vigilant. “We are very, very ahead with a drought if we look at the state of the vegetation which is roughly equivalent to what we had in mid-August last year, so it is very, very worrying”warns a rescuer. Precisely, last August, the Var had been plagued by a large wave of fires which had devastated the vegetation. To avoid accidents, most of the time caused by man, some massifs are closed to the public.
