Vanessa Paradis was one of the headliners of the documentary Top girls broadcast on Arte Thursday July 14 on the occasion of the national holiday. The 49-year-old singer looked back on her debut as a singer: “I was very young. I had a cartoon voice. Such a childish voice”, recognized the companion of Samuel Benchetrit. The opportunity for the mother of Jack and Lily-Rose Depp to return to his violent beginnings.
Vanessa Paradis began her career when she participated in the show The school of fans presented by Jacques Martin in 1981. The 8-year-old girl then took over the title Emily Jolie. But it was in 1987 that Vanessa Paradis enjoyed dazzling success thanks to the title Joe the cab and the singer has forgotten nothing of this period: “The beginnings were very violentshe expressed in the documentary Top girls. I was 14 years old. At 14 it’s not going well for anyone. We are all wondering who we are, what we will become and what is good enough. I started this job with a very, very big success (Joe the cab) and then, as always, when something succeeds, it snowballs. We do a lot, we see you a lot, we hear you a lot. Then I was so intimidated. I didn’t want to look shy, I wanted to be sure of myself.i. Suddenly, I did not look sure of myself, I looked pretentious. So I did not help to soften this phenomenon. It was horrible.”
“People looked at me like I was a caged animal”
Then a young high school student, Vanessa Paradis also remembered the heavy consequences of her notoriety on her daily life: “I went to school in the suburbs. I took the RER in the morning. People looked at me as if I were an animal in a cage and did not pass any comments aloud next to me. We have the I felt like a bit of an object. I was a child and the comments were monstrous. They insulted me, they called me names like birds. They attacked me on my looks, on my music, on my my lack of talent… Really dirty bird names!”
Fortunately, Vanessa Paradis was able to count on the unwavering support of her loved ones and in particular her parents: “My great luck is to have the parents I have. Extraordinary parents who surrounded me so much and gave me a lot of freedom.”
