Vancouver | Police open fire on a suspect who allegedly assaulted a patrol officer

(Vancouver) Vancouver police opened fire and injured a suspect on Saturday after he allegedly assaulted a patrol officer in the Downtown Eastside.

According to a press release from the police, Constable Tania Visintin said that two patrol officers were in their vehicle on Saturday morning when an armed individual allegedly struck one of the officers through the lowered window of a door.

She adds that during the incident, one of the patrol officers opened fire on the suspect.

Also according to Constable Visintin, the police officer who was the victim of the assault suffered serious head injuries and had to be hospitalized. The 53-year-old suspect was also taken to hospital, where he is being treated while under arrest.

During the same incident, another police officer who came as reinforcements was attacked by a passerby who was present at the scene, but he did not suffer serious injuries.

Tania Visintin said the events are being investigated by the Vancouver Police Department’s Major Crimes Division as well as the British Columbia Office of Independent Investigations.
