On Saturday, a suspect attacked patrol officers who were sitting inside their vehicle in the Downtown Eastside neighborhood. One of the officers had been brutally hit on the head through the open door window.

In the aftermath of the assault, the police opened fire on the suspect who was injured and taken to hospital.

In a statement from law enforcement, spokeswoman Tania Visintin said the suspect used a weapon to hit the officer in the head.

She added that one of the officers had first tried to subdue the suspect with a conducted energy weapon, but that it was ultimately with a firearm that he was neutralized.

The 52-year-old defendant is still hospitalized to treat his injuries, but was still charged with one count of aggravated assault from his hospital bed.

In the incident, another backup officer was also attacked by a bystander, but did not sustain serious injuries.
