(Palm Harbor) Aided by an approach shot that stopped five feet from the goal, Adam Schenk birdied on the 18e green and his 70 card, one under par on Saturday, allows him to occupy the first place in the standings of the Valspar PGA Championship.
By virtue of his cumulative score of 205 after 54 holes, eight under par, the 31-year-old American holds a one-shot lead over his compatriot Jordan Spieth and Britain’s Tommy Fleetwood.
Spieth and Fleetwood both shot 69 on Saturday.
On Sunday, Schenk will play alongside Spieth and look for his first career victory on the PGA Tour.
Fleetwood started the day with a birdie and followed it up with 12 straight pars.
As for Spieth, he started his round with an eagle and at one point was leading by two shots. However, he only had three pars over the last 12 holes, and on four occasions he birdied after committing a bogey.
Eight golfers are within three strokes of the leader. Webb Simpson (68) is tied for fourth with Taylor Moore (69) and Cody Gribble (70), two shots off the lead.
Canadian Nick Taylor has brought home a card of 69 and his total of 211 leaves him at 20e rank, tied with four other golfers, including American Justin Thomas.
