Valérie Lemercier in a bright and personal Celine Dion biopic

Tracing Celine Dion’s career seems like a ready-made subject for Valérie Lemercier, in front of and behind the camera. In the form of a fake-biopic, since all names and places have been changed, Aline, which comes out Wednesday, November 3, is a success in all respects and reveals an ambitious director.

In Quebec, Aline is the 14th child of Sylvette and Anglomard Dieu, whose whole family is immersed in music. The youngest has an exceptional voice that they make hear the music producer Guy-Claude. He will transform her at 13 into a successful singer, then into an international star, in family, until the day when Aline falls in love with her mentor.

Valérie Lemercier carries her subject high in Aline, his fourth feature film. She goes from intimate comedies to an international subject, Celine Dion, in a flamboyant staging, like her heroine. The actress interprets Aline from her 8 years to today. Her singing voice is that of singer Victoria Sio, but she gives full speed in her transformations and on stage, also behind the camera.

Valérie Lemercier charms with the progression of the story, the reconstruction of the years 1960-2000, with irresistible performers. Story of a star, Aline has all of an intimate film, his career being managed in family, in isolation. The love story is part of a beautiful melodrama, true, the genre being predestined for the heroine. The humor and tenderness inhabit the film, sincerity, enthusiasm too, of the star and the director.

Aline contrasts with other musical biopics where the drug, sex and depression trilogy dominates. Here it is a little The Little House On The Prairie in the land of show business. Aline bathes like a fish in water in her star role for which she seems to have been destined very young. A natural career favored by a benevolent environment. The scale of the staging serves a story full of twists and turns, with constant humor except when the emotion takes, to tears, like Celine.
