Valérie Grenier finishes third in giant slalom at the World Cup Finals

Valérie Grenier of Ottawa was third in giant slalom at the World Cup Finals on Sunday.

Mikaela Shiffrin, for her part, prevailed for the 21e times in the discipline.

The American has also set one more women’s record.

Shiffrin edged out Vreni Schneider, a week after equaling the Swiss’ 20 giant slalom victories at the World Cup.

Winner of seven of the last eight events, Shiffrin secured the world giant slalom title last month.

Sweden’s Ingemar Stenmark won 46 giant slaloms in the 1970s and 1980s.

Shiffrin won the overall, slalom and giant slalom titles this season. She improved to 88 the absolute record of the number of career victories.

Shiffrin also set a personal-best 2,206 World Cup points, in 31 starts. This is two points more than in 2018-2019, when she participated in 26 races.

Only one skier has obtained more points in a single season: Slovenian Tina Maze in 2012-2013, with 2414.

Her favorite brand dates back to nine years ago. “Honestly, I would say to have become the youngest Olympic champion in slalom. It was the only record that was really a goal, said Shiffrin, who was 18 when she won her first Olympic gold medal at the Sochi 2014 Games.

“It happened a long time ago and I’m still motivated, I still have nervousness at the top of the track. I was so nervous (today too). Because we want to do well. It doesn’t matter the records, it’s just that you want to do well. »

As the sun shone on the Avet course, Shiffrin held on to a first-run lead to edge Thea Louise Stjernesund by 0.06 seconds. The Norwegian clinched her first career podium.

Grenier finished 0.20 seconds behind the winner.

Three of the seven top-ranked skiers did not finish the first run: Petra Vlhova, who won Saturday’s slalom, Federica Brignone and Olympic champion Sara Hector all missed a gate.

Giant slalom world champion in 2013 and 2017, Tessa Worley finished 11e in his last career race.

The Frenchwoman has won 16 giant slaloms and three titles in the discipline, most recently last year.
