Vaccination against COVID-19 | People aged 60 and over and vulnerable people targeted at the end of the summer

A new vaccination campaign against COVID-19 from the end of the summer should target people aged 60 and over and vulnerable people, recommends the Committee on Immunization of Quebec (CIQ) in a notice published Monday.

These are five groups that should receive a booster dose of a vaccine against COVID-19 at the end of the summer, namely people 60 years and older, those living with a chronic disease, immunocompromised or on dialysis, healthcare workers, pregnant women and people living in remote areas, advocates the CIQ.

A booster dose could be offered to the rest of the population “once the priority groups have been adequately reached”, adds the opinion of the CIQ.

This vaccination is recommended whether people have already received one, two, three or even four doses of the vaccine. The important thing is that there is an interval of at least three months between the two doses, or between a COVID-19 infection and the vaccination.

It should be noted that the emergence of a vaccine adapted to the Omicron variant could change the situation and the recommendations of the CIQ.

Three basic doses

The CIQ also establishes that the “basic” vaccination against COVID-19 – the number of doses allowing a person to be satisfactorily protected – is three doses for adults who have never contracted the disease. These are two initial doses and a first booster dose.

“This basic vaccination makes it possible to develop satisfactory protection against serious COVID-19 infections in the context where Omicron is the dominant variant, details the CIQ. Subsequent doses will aim to restore immunity which may wane over time. »

So far, Quebecers are considered adequately vaccinated against COVID-19 after two doses of the vaccine.
