(Lancaster) Nelly Korda played 10 on the third hole in the first round of the U.S. Women’s Open on Thursday after hitting three shots directly into a stream just in front of the 12 greene hole, a par-3.
It was a catastrophic result for the world No. 1 at Lancaster Country Club, an extremely difficult course that has produced very few birdies so far.
Korda then left the green, removed his visor, and buried his head in his hands for several seconds before heading to the next tee box. A cameraman kept his lens fixed on his score of “plus-1,” while a scoreboard attendant changed the sign to “plus-8” next to his name.
The American was the favorite heading into one of the biggest tournaments of the season on the PGA Tour, having won six of her last seven competitions. Korda took the opportunity to win her first major title of the season, the Chevron Championship, where she tied an LPGA record by signing a fifth victory in a row.
Korda only recorded two top 10 career U.S. Women’s Open, one of the toughest tournaments in women’s professional golf.
Quebecer Maude-Aimée Leblanc, from Sherbrooke, as well as Ontario’s Brooke Henderson, are participating in this tournament.
