The administration of Joe Biden announced Monday, December 20 that cars that will be sold in the United States from 2023 will have to consume much less fuel than those currently on the market. “The standards would lead to significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions as well as reductions in other air pollutants”, said the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in a statement.
With these new standards, cars – SUVs and pickups included – will need to be able to travel 55 miles (88.5 kilometers) at continuous speed on one gallon of fuel (nearly 4 liters), or 40 miles (64.4 kilometers) in real traffic conditions. This represents 6.2 liters per 100 kilometers. To achieve this, the administration is counting on the ability of automobile manufacturers to improve the technical performance of the engines in their models, but also on the increase in sales of electric vehicles. “By mid-2026, the EPA predicts that final standards can be met with approximately 17% of electric vehicles sold and wider adoption of advanced gasoline engine technologies available today.”, is it so specified.
