(Greensboro) Canada’s Summer McIntosh and Josh Liendo earned a silver medal at the US Open in swimming on Thursday.
McIntosh was in the lead going into the final turn, but she couldn’t hold on for the final stretch of the 400-metre freestyle.
American Katie Ledecky, world champion, set an event record for the distance by stopping the clock at 3:59.71. McIntosh (3:59.79) swam under four minutes for the third time in his career.
McIntosh beat Ledecky over the same distance last month at the short course World Cup in Toronto.
American Michaela Mattes (4:09.53) won the bronze medal while Ontario’s Katrina Bellio (4:16.77) finished seventh.
Liendo finished behind American David Curtiss in the men’s 50m event.
Curtis took the gold with a time of 21.92 seconds. Liendo followed him in 21.99 while Brazilian Victor Alcara climbed on the third step of the podium following a time of 22.11.
The 20-year-old Liendo has won three medals at the World Championships and four at the Commonwealth Games.
Bellio also finished seventh in the 800m freestyle (8:43.24). In this same discipline, for men, Quebecer Eric Brown recorded the sixth fastest time (8:04.47).
The competition continues until Saturday.
