(New York) Italian world number 1 Jannik Sinner tamed Russian Daniil Medvedev (5e) 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 on Wednesday in New York to reach the semifinals of the US Open tennis tournament for the first time.
Sinner (23 years old), winner of the Australian Open in January, will face the British Jack Draper (25) in the semi-finals on Friday.e), a novice at this level in Grand Slam.
Shock expected since the early eliminations of Carlos Alcaraz (2e tour) and Novak Djokovic (3e tour), the meeting between Sinner and Medvedev did not reach the heights hoped for.
The Italian strolled through the first set before the Russian, who won at Flushing Meadows in 2021, did the same in the second. The trend reversed permanently afterwards, with Sinner proving too solid in all areas of the game, justifying his status as world No. 1.
“It was tough, we know each other well. The first three sets were strange, with quick breaks,” Sinner told the stadium microphone, explaining that he had particularly targeted the net attacks.
This is the 3e time this season that the two players faced each other in a Major: Sinner won the final of the Australian Open, and Medvedev their quarter-final at Wimbledon.
Sinner becomes the third Italian to reach the semi-finals of the men’s tournament after Corrado Barazzutti in 1977 (on clay) and Matteo Berrettini in 2019.
Sinner had started the tournament with controversy following the revelation of his clearing by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) after two positive tests in March, with several players denouncing the opacity of the process and the feeling of a two-speed anti-doping justice system depending on their status.
