The Americans will have to wait a little longer before one of their own wins a Grand Slam title. For now, it is Italy that triumphs. Jannik Sinner defeated Taylor Fritz in three sets of 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 on Sunday in the final of the U.S. Open.
The 23-year-old tennis player was the first Italian in history to reach the final at Flushing Meadows. He also became the first to win it. This is his second Grand Slam title this season – and in his career – after the Australian Open in January. The other two, Wimbledon and Roland Garros, belong to the other young tennis star, Carlos Alcaraz.
Sinner may not have played the greatest match of his career, but he never let his emotions get the better of him. Whenever Fritz was in a good position, Sinner kept his cool and came from behind. Like at the top of the third set, when he saved three break points in total calm before firing an ace and taking over the game. It seemed so easy.
Fritz, who was playing in his first major tournament final, showed good form throughout the match, but he did not excel on serve, which is not his usual style. He was broken three times in the first set alone.
The American continued to push, even when he was 2-0 down in the sets. He saved two break points at 3-3, then broke. Sinner, somewhat shaken in the following games, erased this deficit by breaking in turn to make it 5-5. He won the next two games to take the title.
More details to come.
