US Open | Denis Shapovalov loses men’s doubles

(New York) After being eliminated the day before in singles, Canadian Denis Shapovalov suffered the same fate on Wednesday at the US Open tennis tournament, this time in doubles.

Shapovalov and South Korean Soonwoo Kwon lost 6-4, 6-4 to Switzerland’s Dominic Stricker and Italy’s Flavio Cobolli.

This was Shapo’s third doubles match this season, and he has lost all of them. He was eliminated in the first round with Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik in Madrid in April, and then with his compatriot Vasek Pospisil at the National Bank Open in Montreal.

Stricker and Cobolli will now play Finland’s Harri Heliovaara and Britain’s Henry Patten in the second round. The latter are ranked 11th respectivelye and 12e in the world in doubles, so they are the sixth seeds in this tournament.

Heliovaara will also meet Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski and her British partner Joe Salisbury in the first round of the mixed doubles, along with Kazakhstan’s Anna Danilina.

In the women’s race, Dabrowski and New Zealander Erin Routliffe are the favourites. They will start their journey against Quebecer Leylah Fernandez and Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva.

Montrealer Gabriel Diallo, 22, is the only Canadian still in the singles, after the eliminations of Shapovalov, Fernandez, Félix Auger-Aliassime and Bianca Andreescu on Tuesday.
