Enough to compete with China. Joe Biden announced, Wednesday April 10, a strengthening of defense relations with Japan, as well as an air defense partnership extended to Australia. “Together, our countries are taking important steps to strengthen defense and security cooperation”declared the American president, alongside Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. “This is the most important development in our alliances since the end of the Cold War”he said. “I am also pleased to announce that, for the first time, Japan, the United States and Australia will create an air missile network and defense architecture”said Joe Bien, these two countries being key in its competitive strategy with China.

The American president, however, wanted to emphasize that strengthening the military alliance with Japan was “purely defensive”. The Japanese Prime Minister called for “peace and stability” against a backdrop of tensions between China and Taiwan. Another sign of the rapprochement between Washington and Tokyo, Joe Biden declared that a Japanese astronaut will be the first non-American to land on the Moon, as part of an American space mission.
