US denounces massive cyber intrusion sponsored by China

The United States and its Western allies on Wednesday May 24 accused a “cyber-actor” sponsored by China to have discreetly infiltrated the “critical infrastructure” Americans. In a joint advisory, cybersecurity authorities in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand warned against “a group of activities” malicious also known as “Volt Typhoon”.

In a separate press release, the American group Microsoft explained that Volt Typhoon has been active since mid-2021 and that it has targeted, among other things, critical infrastructure on the island of Guam, which hosts a major American military base in the ‘Pacific Ocean. This campaign risks “disrupt critical communications infrastructure between the United States and the Asian region in future crises”warned Microsoft.

The campaign aims “the communications, industrial, utility, transportation, construction, marine, government, information technology and education sectors”, continued the American technology group. According to Western security agencies, these attacks use in particular the tactic known as “Living off the Land”whereby the attacker uses the features and tools of the system they are targeting to get inside without leaving a trace.
