Hit the wallet to avoid further attacks. The United States announced a series of sanctions targeting the financing channels of Yemen’s Houthi rebels on Thursday, December 28, after their attacks on several commercial ships in the Red Sea.

The sanctions target three exchange offices in Yemen and Turkey, as well as the president of the association of foreign exchange traders in Yemen, accused of having allowed the transfer of money from Iran to the Houthis. These companies serve “as an intermediary in the transfer of funds to and from Yemen and received millions of dollars from the Revolutionary Guards [iraniens] having transited through Turkey, according to the US Department of the Treasury.

Asset freeze

The measures include freezing the assets of the persons and entities targeted, as well as prohibiting any company or American citizen from trading with them. “We call on the international community to take a clear position against the destabilizing activities of the Houthis and their Iranian supporters”said a State Department spokesperson.

The Houthis, who control a large part of Yemen but are not recognized by the international community, repeat that they will continue their attacks as long as food and medicine do not return in sufficient quantities to the Gaza Strip, besieged and bombarded by Israel in reaction to the Hamas attack on October 7. Iran supports the Houthis politically, but denies providing them with military equipment.
