Netflix is set to revive classic animated series, starting with the release of Ranma 1/2 and the upcoming Dragon Ball DAIMA on October 11. DAIMA, an official sequel to Dragon Ball Z, reunites Goku and friends as they revert to childhood due to a spell. This new iteration, supervised by the late Akira Toriyama, aims to capture the whimsical essence of the original comics. The series will also air on ADN, Crunchyroll, and the Mangas channel.
Netflix is increasingly looking to revitalize classic animated series, reminiscent of the iconic Club Dorothée. Just recently, the streaming giant released the debut episode of the new animated adaptation of Ranma 1/2, inspired by the manga created by Rumiko Takahashi.
The original rendition of this beloved series enjoyed immense popularity in the early 90s, particularly during its run on TF1’s beloved children’s program. However, Ranma 1/2 isn’t the sole series making a comeback on Netflix.
Starting October 11, the platform will also premiere the latest animated series, Dragon Ball DAIMA, which will air weekly as a simulcast, aligning with Japan’s release schedule. This series serves as the official sequel to the classic Dragon Ball Z.
Another Chapter in the Dragon Ball Legacy
This new installment is notably the last project overseen by the esteemed manga creator Akira Toriyama before his passing on March 1. Dragon Ball DAIMA returns to the franchise’s roots, as Goku and his allies revert to their childhood due to a mischievous spell.
The show aims to capture the quirky, comedic spirit that defined the earliest volumes of the comics. Interestingly, the storyline of Dragon Ball DAIMA seems to diverge from the narrative of Dragon Ball Super, another acknowledged sequel in the franchise. Ironically, DAIMA’s plot mirrors elements of Dragon Ball GT, a non-canonical series from the 90s in which Goku also regresses to childhood!

It’s worth mentioning that Netflix will not hold exclusive rights to Dragon Ball DAIMA; the anime will also air as a simulcast on dedicated platforms such as ADN and Crunchyroll. Additionally, the Mangas channel will showcase new episodes every Tuesday at 10:50 PM in VOSTFR.
The Dragon Ball DAIMA anime series will be available for streaming on Netflix starting October 11.
