Another major winter storm is heading towards Quebec and it is this Saturday morning that the worst of this system will be felt, with precipitation going up to 40 centimeters And strong winds.

Barely recovered from last Wednesday’s storm, Quebecers will experience a second broadside in several regions on Saturday. 25 to 40 centimeters of snow are forecast in a corridor north of the St. Lawrence River, such as in Quebec, and for the regions of Charlevoix, Côte-Nord, Bas-Saint-Laurent as well as the southeast of the Gaspésie.

“Saturday morning, the worst conditions are in southern Quebec in terms of heavy snow and blowing snow. Snow settles in central Quebec [au même moment]while it settles during the day on the Bas-Saint-Laurent and then towards the east of Quebec, to reach the Basse-Côte-Nord during the night from Saturday to Sunday”, summarizes Jean-Philippe Bégin , meteorologist for Environment Canada.

The storm will arrive quickly and its intensity could also surprise road users.

“We are talking about two to five centimeters of snow per hour for precipitation rates, so road conditions will deteriorate quickly,” specifies the meteorologist.

The regions further north, going towards Lac-Saint-Jean, will receive less snow, i.e. 10 to 20 centimeters. Same story for the regions around Rimouski and Mont-Joli. Montreal and regions further south are also expected to receive the same amount of snow.

Strong winds and blowing snow

For certain regions, strong winds will mix with this precipitation, continues Mr. Bégin.

“Special mention to the areas near Quebec which will have a lot of strong winds and heavy snow which will lead to difficult road conditions. There will be conditions of zero visibility, in addition to talking about coastal overflows,” he argues.

These storm surges particularly concern the areas where the phenomenon occurred last Wednesday, such as Saguenay and southeastern Quebec.

Saturday afternoon, regions further south, such as Estrie, could see snow turn into rain. The snow will decrease in intensity in southwestern Quebec on Saturday evening and will increase in intensity further in the east of the province.

During last Wednesday’s storm, the Quebec region and surrounding areas received between 30 and 50 centimeters of snow, while Montreal and the surrounding areas received between 15 and 20 centimeters.
