Up to 30 cm of snow expected in the Northeast

(Boston) A slow-moving storm over the northeastern United States on Friday could leave up to 30 centimeters of snow behind, while other regions faced a mix of sleet and ice.

The US National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for most of New England and eastern New York. Winter weather watches were in effect from Ohio to the coastal regions of southern New England and northern Maine.

Governors across the region have asked their citizens to avoid unnecessary travel, and those who need to go out to do so with caution. The speed limit has been lowered to no more than 75 kilometers per hour on several highways.

Hundreds of flights have been canceled at major airports in the area, including more than 300 at Logan International Airport in Boston and more than 100 at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey.

The police report multiple accidents on the icy roads. There are at least four deaths in Missouri, including that of a 74-year-old woman who lost control of her car. Police believe she may have been driving too fast for the prevailing conditions. The other victims are aged 18, 52 and 54.

Bad weather also interfered with public transport. Commuter rail service was partially halted in New Jersey when a tree fell on the tracks.

A commuter train was delayed in Massachusetts when it hit a snowplow used for plowing sidewalks that had for some reason been abandoned on the tracks. No one was hurt.

Ski resorts in the region welcomed the snowflakes after the unusually warm weather of the past few days.
