Unvaccinated federal employees placed on unpaid leave

(Ottawa) Federal public sector employees who have not been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 will be placed on unpaid leave on Monday, unless they have already obtained accommodation.

The policy could potentially leave more than a thousand workers without pay and unable to obtain Employment Insurance benefits.

As of November 3, the vast majority of federal officials were fully immunized, according to what has been reported.

Of the approximately 267,000 employees who declared their status, just over 3,000 requested some sort of accommodation in order to be able to work without having received their doses.

Several federal public sector unions have said they plan to file grievances if they believe an employee’s human rights are being violated.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in presenting the policy that it would be difficult to get exemptions and accommodations.
