Unraveling the Mystery: What We Know About New Jersey’s Enigmatic Drones

Drones have been frequently spotted over the northeastern U.S. since mid-November, leading to various conspiracy theories and public concern, especially near military sites. Despite the heightened anxiety, officials, including Homeland Security’s Secretary, have reported no evidence of a threat. Recent FAA rule changes allowing nighttime drone flights may explain the increase in sightings. New York plans to implement an advanced drone detection system to address the situation, while authorities caution against dangerous responses to the drones.

The Mystery of Drones Over the Northeastern U.S.

For nearly a month now, the skies over the United States have been buzzing with intrigue as drones spark a wave of conspiracy theories each night. In a recent press conference, Alejandro Mayorkas, the Secretary of Homeland Security, offered some insights but stopped short of providing a definitive explanation.

Since November 18, numerous drone sightings have been reported in New Jersey, close to New York City, as well as in other parts of the northeastern U.S. In total, these mysterious flying objects have been observed across six states: New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Virginia.

Heightened concerns arose when drones were detected near the Picatinny Arsenal, a U.S. military research facility, and above the golf course owned by former President Donald Trump in Bedminster. Among the wild theories circulating on social media, some users speculate that a “dirty” nuclear bomb has reached New York and that the drones are monitoring radiation levels, while others resort to the classic conspiracy theory of extraterrestrial involvement.

Investigating the Drones: What Authorities Are Saying

Despite the mounting anxiety surrounding these sightings, officials have not found any evidence pointing to a threat to public safety. An FBI official shared with CNN, “I think there has been a slight overreaction.” Many of the reported drone sightings occurred simultaneously with airplane flights, leading to confusion among the public.

The Secretary of Homeland Security clarified that there is “no foreign involvement” in these incidents. Responding to rumors of Iranian espionage, which were fueled by a Republican official, the government stated, “There are no Iranian vessels off the coast of the United States, and no so-called mother ships launching drones towards our shores.”

Authorities revealed that these drones, which can measure up to 1.8 meters in diameter, often operate with their lights turned off and fly in a coordinated manner. While commercially available drones tend to be smaller, larger models exceeding one meter are typically used in professional settings, including mapping, construction inspections, and defense applications.

Mayorkas pointed out that recent changes in federal regulations allowing for nighttime drone flights may account for the surge in reports. “In September 2023, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) revised its rules to permit drones to operate at night, which could explain why sightings have increased, particularly during dusk and dawn,” he noted.

It’s important to mention that most drones are prohibited from flying at night unless they are outfitted with anti-collision lights that can be seen from at least 5 kilometers away.

In a separate incident, two men were arrested for trespassing after their drone came “dangerously close” to Boston Logan International Airport, according to police reports.

As for the approach to managing these drones, former President Donald Trump suggested shooting them down. However, authorities have deemed this option too hazardous, given the risks associated with falling debris. The FAA has cautioned that operators of hazardous drones could face fines of up to $75,000 and the suspension of their pilot licenses.

In response to the ongoing situation, New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced on Sunday that federal authorities will be implementing a new “advanced drone detection system” in the state. This initiative could yield more information in the days to come.
