(Madison) The University of Wisconsin fired men’s hockey coach Tony Granato following a second straight losing season on Monday.
Under his watch, the Badgers went 105-129-16 in seven seasons, including 65-87-2 inside the Big Ten division.
The team finished the 2022-23 season with a 13-23 record, losing Saturday to the University of Michigan in the Big Ten quarterfinals.
The previous season, the club’s performance was 10-24-3.
“I greatly appreciate how much ‘Coach Granato’ has given his heart and soul to us,” University of Wisconsin athletic director Chris McIntosh said in a statement. No one is as dedicated as he is to our hockey program or to the University of Wisconsin. »
Granato played with the Badgers from 1983 to 1987, before playing 13 seasons in the NHL.
He then spent another 13 seasons as a head or assistant coach in the National League.
As an NHL player, he tallied 248 goals and 492 points in 774 games.
He notably signed three consecutive seasons of at least 30 goals with the Los Angeles Kings, starting in 1990-91.
The 58-year-old American was named Big Ten Coach of the Year in 2017 and 2021.
