University of Sherbrooke | Ottawa invests in environmental research

(Montreal) The federal Minister of the Environment, Steven Guilbeault, was in Estrie on Monday to announce funding for several research activities at the University of Sherbrooke.

The total amounts announced by the federal government could reach $772,500.

The University of Sherbrooke will receive up to $400,000 over five years to study lake watersheds and assess the link between watershed changes and ecosystem health in the context of climate change.

The university will also receive up to $192,000 over two years to conduct research on biological windows in landfills. According to a statement released by the Ministry of the Environment, a biowindow “is a methane mitigation system in which portions of the existing site cover are replaced with biologically active materials, such as coarse soil or compost “.

This research could help reduce methane emissions from these sites, at lower cost, according to the same press release.

The university will also receive up to $80,500 for a research project investigating the impact of bathymetric data collection techniques (underwater topography) on flood mapping results.

A sum of $100,000 will also be granted to the establishment to identify key areas for biodiversity in Quebec.
