(Glendale) The University of Connecticut added another dominant performance to its record as it defeated Purdue University 75-60 on Monday to become the first team since 2007 to win back-to-back NCAA championships.
Tristen Newton scored 20 points for the Huskies, who won a 12e straight game at March Madness, all by a margin of at least 13 points.
Connecticut was efficient on offense, but won thanks to its defensive play. The Huskies (37-3) limited the second-best team in the United States in three-pointers to seven shots from downtown, only one of which was successful.
They let Canadian Zach Edey – Associated Press player of the year – score 37 points on 25 shots.
The Huskies won their sixth national title and joined the Florida Gators (2006-07) and Duke Blue Devils (1991-92) as the third team with back-to-back titles since the University of California dynasty in Los Angeles.
“I can’t even believe it,” Huskies coach Dan Hurley said. You know how difficult this tournament is. »
The Boilermakers (34-5) certainly know that. They reached the final this year after being the second team established as a favorite to win March Madness to be eliminated in the first round last year.
However, they remain in search of a first title.
