Universal Pictures announced on Thursday, August 1, that it is preparing a biopic on Britney Spears. The studio has in fact recently won a “very competitive auction” for the film adaptation rights of The Woman in Me, the singer’s memoirs.

According to the statement shared by the studio, the producer of La La Land, Marc Platt is expected to oversee the project. “I’m working on a secret project with #MarcPlatt. He’s always made my favorite movies,” Britney Spears announced on social media on Thursday. The director of Crazy Rich Asians, Jon Chu is set to direct the film, the company also said.

Known for his musical biopics such as 8 Mile on rapper Eminem, the studio is also preparing other biopics on the life of rapper Snoop Dogg and that of singer Prince, who died in 2021. The film dedicated to the life of Britney Spears does not yet have a release date.

The writing of The Woman in Me, text on which the The biopic’s script allowed the singer, once freed from the guardianship that had governed every aspect of her life for 13 years, to reclaim her story.

The interpreter of Toxic She looks back on the legal battles she had with her family and, from her impoverished childhood spent in the shadow of an alcoholic father, to her relationship with Justin Timberlake, including paparazzi harassment, she doesn’t evade anything. She reveals in particular that Justin Timberlake pushed her to have an abortion during their relationship.

After her descent into hell in 2007, the singer was placed under the guardianship of her father Jamie Spears, who controlled her money and her private life, even as she performed concerts in Las Vegas. “If I was not able to make decisions, why was I considered capable of performing in public?” asks the singer in her book, recounting that she was no longer even in control of her diet.

Driven by her fans, gathered under the slogan “Free Britney”, The pop star eventually rebelled and the American justice system overturned the guardianship in 2021. Her father has always maintained that he had his daughter’s best interests at heart.
