This is the second time in his career that Marino has reached this milestone at a Grand Slam tournament. She had achieved the tour de force in 2011, at the French Open.
Against Romania’s Simona Halep on Monday, Marino had 13 aces, compared to Snigur’s only one, and three double faults. She also won 74% of the points after lodging her first service ball in play.
The Vancouver athlete also took advantage of the irregularity of Snigur, who committed 48 unforced errors, including one while facing a match point.
Marino had three service breaks in eight chances and managed to save five of the seven break points she faced.
In the third round, Marino will battle China’s Zhang Shuai.
Later Wednesday, Laval’s Leylah Fernandez, 14e seeded and runner-up in 2021 will face Russian Liudmila Samsonova, while Bianca Andreescu, tournament champion in 2019, will try to overcome Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia.
Andreescu’s match, which will be played on the Louis-Armstrong Stadium court, will immediately follow that between Montreal’s Félix Auger-Aliassime, seeded sixth, and Britain’s Jack Draper.
In women’s doubles, Ottawa’s Gabriela Dabrowski and her partner Giuliana Olmos of Mexico are scheduled to play their first round match against Americans Peyton Stearns and Ashlyn Krueger.
Dabrowski and Olmos are the fifth seeds in the competition.
