(Pinehurst) Jon Rahm withdrew from the U.S. Open Tuesday afternoon because of an infection in his left foot that led to concerns about his play.
Rahm, a former Masters Tournament champion and world number one, announced his decision via a social media post. He said he consulted doctors and felt it was the best long-term solution.
Rahm had to withdraw from a LIV Tour tournament in Houston last week due to severe foot pain.
The Spaniard arrived on the course at Pinehurst No. 2 with a sandal on his foot, hoping that antibiotics would allow him to heal in time for the first round on Thursday.
“Every time I can play, I feel like I have a good chance of winning,” he said during a press conference on Tuesday.
In an interview with Spanish website ten-golf.com, Rahm expressed concern that the compensation he would have to make to his swing could lead to problems that would extend through the rest of the year.
Rahm told the Spanish media outlet that “if I get to a point where I don’t know if I can win, I don’t know if it’s worth going to compete.”
