Bouchard, whose last appearance in this singles tournament dates back to 2019, won in 91 minutes against the 21-year-old Japanese, ranked 197e in the world.

Bouchard had two aces and three double faults, hit 66% of his first serves and won 67% of the points after lodging his first ball in play.

In the next round, Bouchard will face Linda Noskova, a 17-year-old Czech ranked 87e in the world.

Noskova is seen as one of the most promising young players on the women’s tour. In 2021, she won the women’s singles in the junior section of the French Open.

Later on Tuesday, Canada’s Carol Zhao suffered the elimination, losing 6-2, 6-4 to China’s Lin Zhu, 74e world player and second seed of the qualifying tournament.
