(New York) The day after Canada’s perfect singles day at the US Open, Denis Shapovalov also reached the second round on Tuesday, although he had to work very hard to get there.

The 23-year-old Ontarian needed nearly three hours and five sets to defeat Switzerland’s Marc-Andrea Huesler 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
In the final set, Shapovalov scored a break in the second game which helped him build a 3-0 lead. He finished the game with another break, his fourth of the game.
Facing 85e world player, Shapovalov had 12 aces, but also committed 11 double faults. He only managed 57% of his first serves, but still won 80% of the points after lodging his first ball in play. He faced eight break points and saved five.
In the next round, Shapovalov, 19e seeded, will face the winner of the duel which was presented Tuesday evening between the Spaniards Jaume Munar and Roberto Carballes Baena.
That match was suspended due to rain after just over three hours of action when Carballes Baena led 6-1, 6-3, 4-6, 4-1.
All the Canadians who won on Monday will take the reins again on Wednesday, starting with Rebecca Marino, in the early afternoon, who will try to stop the momentum of Ukrainian Daria Snigur, who fell from Romania’s Simona Halep.
