California companies have discovered they may have hired North Korean workers. Hundreds of employees are working remotely.
The scenario could be that of a spy movie. For several months, dozens of North Korean workers have managed to get hired as teleworkers in American companies. To do this, they created false identities using artificial intelligence and photos retrieved from websites. Hundreds of companies are said to be directly concerned. Many did not notice anything during the job interview.
Stu Sjouwerman, CEO of KnowBe4, explains: “He told us about his strengths, his weaknesses, his career and what he wanted to develop. Everything he said in his answers was perfect. But the day we sent a computer to this Kyle, he tried to install malware on it.” The goal of most of these infiltrators: to send money back to their country. In some cases, they also open the door to large-scale cyberattacks.
