(Wilmington) Joe Biden, the oldest sitting US president, celebrated his 79th birthday on Saturday with his family the day after a medical check-up deeming him “fit” to lead the United States.
The Democratic president is spending his birthday weekend in his stronghold in Wilmington, 170 km from the capital Washington. He doesn’t have a public event on his agenda.
“Happy birthday to my friend, to my brother,” wished him Barack Obama, of which Joe Biden was the vice-president for eight years, on Twitter.
“America is grateful for your compassion, your decency, your love for the nation as well as for your leadership and your ambition,” also underlined the Democratic Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, two years her senior.
On the eve of his birthday, Joe Biden had submitted to a health check during which he was deemed “fit” to fulfill his duties as president, according to his doctor. The exam included a colonoscopy under anesthesia during which he briefly transferred his powers to Vice President Kamala Harris, who became the first woman to hold presidential prerogatives in US history.
Joe Biden has already made it known publicly that he plans to run again in 2024.
But some supporters of Donald Trump, also in his seventies, do not lose any opportunity to question publicly, in a more or less roundabout way, about his physical health and his lucidity.
