A police officer in New Mexico, United States, was fatally stabbed on Sunday afternoon before the suspect was shot and killed by a witness.
The incident occurred around 5 p.m. while Officer Jonah Hernandez of the Las Cruces Police Department (LCPD) was responding to a trespassing call. When he arrived on scene, he allegedly located the 29-year-old suspect, but the latter allegedly stabbed him at least once.
Seriously injured, the police officer was transported to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
“So far, the investigation has also revealed that the attacker was shot and killed by someone who witnessed at least part of the interaction. A witness then used Hernandez’s radio to call for help,” LCPD said in a Facebook post.
In addition to leaving behind his colleagues, Jonah Hernandez leaves behind his wife and his two sons aged 10 and 2.
