(Seattle) A stolen yacht. A dramatic rescue. A dead fish. A famous house that had served as a setting for the film The Goonie made in 1985.
What is the connection between them?
The arrest of a Canadian fugitive.
Authorities in the western US state of Oregon say a series of ‘really bizarre’ events in a 48-hour period led to the arrest of Jericho Wolf Labonte, of Victoria, British Columbia.
The 35-year-old Canadian is being held in the town of Seaside, police said.
Hours earlier, he had been rescued by the US Coast Guard after the yacht he was piloting was overturned by large waves. Labonte was briefly hospitalized, suffering from mild hypothermia.
He was released by the authorities. However, police in the nearby town of Astoria saw the video of the rescue and recognized the man who covered security cameras at the Goonies and left there… a fish. Labonte had posted a video on social media where he is seen abandoning the fish at the house of the Goonies and dancing around the property.
Seaside police say they found Labonte Friday night at a homeless shelter where he was staying under an alias. He was arrested for theft, mischief, endangering others and unauthorized use of a vehicle.
Victoria Police had recently issued a notice saying the man was wanted for mischief, harassment and three refusals to comply.
It is unclear whether Labonte has an attorney to be able to comment on the situation on his behalf.
“The last 48 hours have been really weird! exclaimed Astoria Police Chief Stacy Kelly.
