In the United States, Sidney Holmes, a man sentenced to 400 years in prison, was finally cleared and released. He had been accused of having served as a driver during a robbery, and will have spent 34 years of his life in prison.
After 34 years in prison, Sidney Holmes has just been found not guilty and released. He had been sentenced to a sentence like only United States can pronounce: 400 years behind bars for robbery. “I am so grateful to God and to all the people who made this possible”said the mother of Sidney Holmes. “You should never lose hope, it’s something you can’t give up”welcomed Sidney Holmes.
Two years of investigation by a special unit
For Sidney Holmes, it all started on June 19, 1988. Then 22 years old, he had been accused of having served as a driver during a robbery. Incarcerated, he never ceased to proclaim his innocence. Even relatives of the victims have expressed doubts about his guilt. After two years of investigation by a special unit, the now fifty-year-old was finally cleared. “When I went to prison, my daughter was only seven months old. Now she is 35 years old. I’m going to have to rebuild our whole relationship.”, To late Sidney Holmes. According to the law, he could claim several million dollars in compensation.
