United Nations | Canadian Ambassador Bob Rae to chair Economic and Social Council

(Ottawa) Canadian Ambassador to the United Nations Bob Rae will chair the UN Economic and Social Council.

The U.N. body said Thursday that Rae was elected unopposed as the council’s president for a one-year term. He replaces Chilean Paula Narváez Ojeda.

The Economic and Social Council is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations. It is this body that coordinates the United Nations’ initiatives on international development.

Global Affairs Canada says Mr. Rae’s presidency will focus on the ethical use of artificial intelligence for sustainable development, global migration and financing solutions for international development.

Ottawa emphasizes that this mandate coincides with Canada’s arrival at the presidency of the G7 next year.

Mr. Rae is the third Canadian to chair a UN body.
