Unifor says the federal government should block WestJet’s takeover of Sunwing Airlines unless the group makes a formal commitment to create jobs and invest in its workers.
The union says it is concerned that the acquisition will lead to more contract work, with lower wages and precarious conditions, despite WestJet’s promise of job creation.
Unifor made the comments as part of Transport Canada’s review of the deal announced last March.
Union says Competition Bureau and federal department investigations rarely consider how mergers affect jobs, but notes it’s in the public interest — and possible under the Competition Act — obtain the assurance that quality jobs will be created.
He expressed concern that WestJet’s reference in the consultation documents to “optimizing crews” and “improving operating cost efficiencies”, which could indicate the loss of jobs or their subcontracting.
In announcing the deal, WestJet said the acquisition would protect and create jobs, including using Sunwing’s seasonal aircraft year-round.
