Martinicans want to believe it. They hope that Mount Pelée will become a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The file has been filed and the response is expected next July. This volcanic natural site is one of the best preserved in the Antilles.

In the very north of Martinique, Mount Pelée rises to an altitude of 1,397 meters, the highest point on the island. This splendor of nature postulates to be included in the Unesco world heritage. Two experts appointed by the international organization are currently in Martinique to assess this heritage as fantastic as it is sulphurous. The volcano is still active. “In 1902 there was a repeat of several explosions and several eruptions“, explains Georges Boudon, volcanologist and professor at the‘Institut de physique du globe de Paris (IPGP).

In Saint-Pierre (Martinique), the eruptions of 1902 had caused countless damage. 30,000 people lost their lives and the population was traumatized for many generations. From now on, the inhabitants of the city are much more philosophical. “I’m used to it and now I’m not afraid anymore“Says a resident of Saint-Pierre. Fortunately, Mount Pelée is monitored 24 hours a day by teams of technicians.
