After settling at a record low of 5.3% in March in Canada, the unemployment rate edged down another 0.1 percentage point to 5.2% in April. This is therefore a new record since comparable data exist, i.e. since 1976.
In Quebec, the unemployment rate fell from 4.1% in March to 3.9% in April, which is the lowest rate ever recorded in the province. Quebec is one of the few provinces to have lost jobs last month. After two months of increases, employment fell by 27,000 in April. These are full-time jobs concentrated in the construction sector and in educational services.
Employment and the unemployment rate (5.4%) remained stable in Ontario.
