The US Coast Guard said on Twitter only “further research” gave “negative results”but that they continued. “Data from the Canadian P-3 aircraft [participant aux recherches] have been shared with our Navy experts for further analysis which will be taken into account in future research plans.”they add.

Very difficult research

According to the magazine RollingStoneciting the United States Department of Homeland Security, a Canadian aircraft “heard banging sounds in this area every 30 minutes. Four hours later, additional sonar was deployed and the banging was still heard”. CNN, citing an internal US government document, also reported the noises without specifying when they were detected.

Rescuers face a gigantic technical challenge because of the depth of the North Atlantic, experts say. The search area extends over 20,000 square kilometers in the North Atlantic, and potentially goes down to a depth of 4,000 meters.

“It’s pitch black down there. It’s freezing cold. The seabed is mud and it’s wavy. You can’t see your hand in front of your face.”

The OceanGate Expeditions submersible was carrying three passengers who had paid $250,000 for their place on board the expedition when it disappeared on Sunday: British billionaire Hamish Harding, Pakistani tycoon Shahzada Dawood and his son, Suleman.

OceanGate Expeditions boss Stockton Rush and French submariner Paul-Henri Nargeolet, nicknamed “Mr. Titanic” for his frequent dives at the site, are also on board. In less than two days, the oxygen will run out in the device.
